Medicare Savings Programs

Qualification for Medicaid and Medicare Savings Programs is based on income and resources, and can vary from state to state. Below are the Medicare Savings Programs and their 2026 monthly income and resource limits. You may still qualify in your state even if your income or resources are higher than the federal limits listed.

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): Helps pay for Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. 2026 monthly income limit: $1,350 individual / $1,824 married couple; resource limit: $9,950 individual / $14,910 couple.

Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): Helps pay for Part B premiums only. 2026 monthly income limit: $1,616 individual / $2,184 married couple; resource limit: $9,950 individual / $14,910 couple.

Qualifying Individual (QI): Helps pay for Part B premiums only. You must apply every year. 2026 monthly income limit: $1,816 individual / $2,455 married couple; resource limit: $9,950 individual / $14,910 couple.

Qualified Disabled & Working Individual (QDWI): Helps pay for Part A premiums only, for certain working people with a disability. 2026 monthly income limit: $5,405 individual / $7,299 married couple; resource limit: $4,000 individual / $6,000 couple.

Full Medicaid: Covers everything QMB covers and may offer additional benefits not covered by QMB.

Low Income Subsidy (LIS) Qualification

You will often hear Low Income Subsidy referred to as "Extra Help", and abbreviated as LIS. Simply put, Low Income Subsidy assistance provides financial assistance for prescription drugs (Medicare Part D). Qualification for Extra Help is based on your income and resources, and these limits may go up each year.

2026 Extra Help income and resource limits:

Individuals with income less than $23,940 per year and resources less than $18,090 qualify.

Married couples with income less than $32,460 per year and resources less than $36,100 qualify.

As of 2026, everyone who qualifies for Extra Help receives the full subsidy. The chart below shows what you'll pay for prescription drugs under Extra Help in 2026. Our agents would be happy to assist you in verifying and/or applying for Low Income Subsidy assistance.
